Medearis "MD" Dixson

A Soulful Insight on MD

At The Age of 3 years, Medearis has always been infatuated with music. His first encounter with a saxophone was when he won it at the Puyallup Fair. There was also a Piano in his apartment that he would often walk accross to make noise.

 

In fifth grade, Medearis was inspired by the 98.9 Smooth Jazz Radio where he listened to multiple Smooth Jazz Artists and other artists connected to Motown and Atlantic Records. Medearis asked his his parents for a saxophone but was presented with a  trumpet because “Reeds are expensive”. Medearis Dixson practiced trumpet in his 5th grade band  class under the direction of the Late Seattle Legend Ed Lee.

 

In the Summer of 2007, Medearis Was presented with his first Alto Saxophone. He began practicing all summer with “Uncle” Gary Hammon to begin his Journey as a young Saxophonist. When he transitioned from Dimmitt Middle school to Nelsen Middle School, Medearis Joined the middle school jazz band under the direction of Joey Roberts. During band class, Medearis found out that he had the ability of perfect pitch when Mr. Roberts would conduct ear training. During this time period, Medearis was hired by Darren Motamedy to perform at Kona Kai Coffee, after he discovered him at a school jazz band concert,  where he made his first 12 dollars as a Jazz Musicians.

 

As a High Schooler, Medearis participated in multiple music related activities such as the Marching band, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Band. as a Freshman on his first day of Band, Medearis was given the nickname MD by a senior he looked up to named James Sears. James Sears took Medearis to Various churches in the Seattle, Renton and Burien area where he began learning how to play for the Lord. Also during this time period in high school, MD got his first experience as a traveling musician when he started competing in the NAACP ACT-SO (Afro Academic Cultural Scientific Olympics) competition where he traveled to various states to compete.

 

After Graduating High School, MD found himself in multiple bands. Starting with The Carl Ratcliffe and the Experience band. This band was known for its Neo-Soul/Smooth Jazz sound with a hint of experimental Jazz Fusion. The Next Band MD found himself in was the Victor Janusz Band where he learned the art of Diversity between Traditional Jazz, mixed with French, Italian, and Latin feels. This lead to MD playing a prominent role in Victor Janusz’s Cafè Pluvieux Album that was released in 2018. MD was also a band member in Surround Band under the direction of Clifford “Kip” Dumas where he was introduced to Funk Style Music. Surround  Sound Band performed  in Portland, Tri-Cities, and Other cities while based in Seattle to spread their interpretation of music that inspired dancing and having a good time. MD in this time also met and befriended singer Josephine Howell. While under Josephine Howell’s leadership, MD was introduced to the concept of creating special moments, commanding the stage, telling stories, and making it a point that people left the performance better than when they had arrived. This relationship landed MD with the opportunity to record on her Self Titled Album that was released in 2018. These specific groups heavily influenced MD’s music career.

 

Saxophonist MD plays with the sophistication and maturity of jazz artists twice his age.

 

At the young age of 27, MD is already sharing the stage with the some of the top Jazz & R&B musicians in Seattle. MD has shared the stage with Andrew Gouche, Jerry "Kokane" Long, Tendai Maraire of Shabazz Palaces, Roy Hargrove, David Sanborn, Branford Marsalis Quartet, Owuor Arunga, Liv Warfield, Mike Phillips, Duffy Bishop, among many others. Also, Medearis was blessed to record on a Pierre Kwenders project that was nominated for a Polaris Music Prize. As a young producer, Medearis was also blessed to record on Kendrick Lamar's Savior record alongside with Mario Lucciano.

 

Medearis was honored with the privilege of performing at illustrious performing arts places like, The Kennedy Center, McCall Hall, Beneroya Hall, and Carnegie Hall.

 

Medearis’s prolific talents and determination has landed him the Director Of the House Band position for Wonder of Women International’s history making WOW Gallery.

 

These accolades and accomplishments are catalyzing a musical journey of inspiration and high place vibrations of healing and joy through storytelling and art in the very heart of the Seattle Renaissance
